Questions
What is the current SCSS interest rate?
8.2% a year for October–December 2026 (Q3 FY 2026-27), unchanged by the Ministry of Finance on 30 September 2026. Interest is paid every quarter, on the first working day of April, July, October and January.
Who can open an SCSS account?
Individuals aged 60 or above; retired people aged 55–60 who invest within one month of getting retirement benefits; and retired defence personnel aged 50–60. The maximum deposit is ₹30 lakh per person, and the account matures in 5 years, extendable by 3 years at the rate then in force.
Is SCSS interest taxable?
Yes, at your slab rate. Under the old regime the deposit qualifies for the ₹1.5 lakh deduction. Banks and post offices deduct TDS if interest crosses ₹1 lakh a year for senior citizens; submit Form 15H if your total tax is nil.
