Questions
How many months should I cover?
Six months of essential expenses is a good default. Choose 9–12 months if you are self-employed, the only earner, or work in an unstable industry; 3 months may be enough with a very stable job and a working spouse.
Where should I keep it?
Somewhere safe and quick to access: a savings account, a sweep-in FD or a liquid mutual fund. Do not keep it in shares or lock it in long-term deposits.
What counts as an essential expense?
What you must pay even after losing your income: rent or EMIs, food, utilities, insurance premiums, school fees and transport. Leave out eating out, shopping and holidays.
