Questions

What is one unit of electricity?

One unit is 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) — a 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour, or a 100-watt TV running for 10 hours.

Why is my real bill different?

Tariffs differ by state and most use slabs — the rate rises as you use more units. Some states give free or subsidised units, and bills also add electricity duty, fuel surcharges and fixed charges. Use the average rate from your last bill for the best estimate.

How can I reduce my bill?

AC, geysers and old fridges use the most power. Set the AC to 24–26 °C, use 5-star rated appliances, switch to LED lights and BLDC fans, and switch off the geyser after use.
