Is Your Phone Slow? 10 Simple Fixes Before You Buy a New One
In short

A slow, laggy phone doesn’t always need replacing. Ten practical fixes — storage, apps, updates, battery and more — that can make your phone feel faster today.

Apps take forever to open, the keyboard lags, and the camera freezes just when you want to capture that perfect moment. The first thought is often: “Time for a new phone.”

Before you spend ₹20,000 or more, try these simple fixes. As a software engineer, I’ve helped family and friends bring many “dead slow” phones back to life with just these steps.

1. 💾 Free Up Storage

This is the number-one cause of a slow phone. When storage is nearly full, the system has no room to work. Try to keep at least 10–15% of storage free.

  • Delete old WhatsApp media — forwarded videos and “good morning” images take a surprising amount of space.
  • Back up photos to the cloud or a hard disk, then remove them from the phone (see my 3-2-1 backup guide).
  • Remove downloaded movies and songs you’ve already watched or heard.

2. 🗑️ Uninstall Apps You Don’t Use

Many apps run in the background, send notifications and update themselves. If you haven’t opened an app in three months, uninstall it.

3. 🔄 Install Updates

System and app updates often include speed improvements and important security fixes. Update over Wi-Fi when the phone is charging.

4. 🔁 Restart Once a Week

A simple restart clears temporary memory and stops stuck processes. It’s surprising how often this alone fixes lag.

5. 🧹 Clear App Cache (Android)

For heavy apps like social media and browsers, go to Settings → Apps → [App] → Storage → Clear cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your data.

6. 🪶 Use “Lite” Versions

Some popular apps have lighter versions, or you can use the website in your browser instead of a heavy app.

7. 🎨 Reduce Animations and Live Widgets

Live wallpapers and many home-screen widgets use memory and battery. A simple wallpaper and fewer widgets make the phone feel snappier.

8. 🔋 Check Battery Health

An old, worn battery can make a phone slow down to avoid sudden shutdowns. On iPhone, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. On many Android phones, check the battery section or the manufacturer’s support app. Replacing a battery at an authorised service centre costs far less than a new phone.

9. 🦠 Remove Suspicious Apps

Apps that show pop-up ads everywhere, drain battery quickly, or that you don’t remember installing could be adware or malware. Uninstall them, and only install apps from the official Play Store or App Store.

10. 🏭 Factory Reset — The Last Option

If nothing works, back up everything and do a factory reset. It removes years of clutter and often makes the phone feel almost new. Make sure your photos, contacts and WhatsApp chats are backed up first!

“Most slow phones are not old — they are just full.”

📱 When It Really Is Time to Upgrade

If your phone no longer receives security updates, the battery can’t last half a day even after replacement, or the apps you need won’t install, then upgrading is the safer choice. Pass the old phone on for recycling at an authorised e-waste collection point rather than throwing it away.
